Comments:
This was a single track bridge that was widened to double track in 1868. It had a walkway inside the bridge with places for pedestrians to retreat when a train was passing through. An article in the New York Times of December 8, 1851, notes a collision of two trains on a Concord Railroad covered bridge near Goffstown over the Merrimack River. The engines and cars were seriously damaged, but passengers were not.
