Mohawk River Bridge, Amsterdam, Montgomery County, NY Built 1843
Elna Johnson Collection
Comments:
The north span was washed away in 1865 by a floating section of the Caughnawaga Bridge and replaced by an iron span. On 16-Feb-1876, about 2/3 of the covered bridge was washed about 5 miles down river as the result of an ice jam freshet. The bridge landed on the flats about 2 miles downstream of Cranesville. The Remington Bridge Works of Ilion won the contract to rebuild the bridge on the existing piers. Based on early images, an all-metal Post Truss was constructed as the replacement.
