Comments:
Rebuilt into two separate bridges, VT-14-17x & VT-14-18. Per the Vermont Phoenix (Brattleboro), August 12, 1898, "Selectman Gallup with several men are shingling the covered bridge across the Green river in the village." Per the Morrisville Messenger, November 9, 1927, "The old covered bridge over the Green river at Garfield has been swept away as has the small bridges on the Brook road to Centerville,..." The bridge was apparently reset or rebuilt. Per The Burlington Free Press, October 3, 1974, the Garfield covered bridge was thought to have been built around 1907. Garfield had dwindled from a thriving village after a big sawmill was lost around 1920. The bridge was strengthened in 1946, but in 1965 the town installed a large culvert and fill just downstream and bypassed the bridge. In an effort to save the bridge in 1971 J. Phillip Rich bought the bridge from the town. He subsequently sold the bridge to Asa Properties Vermont which had new developments in Pomfret and West Windsor and split the bridge in parts to be used at both.
