Comments:
This double barrel bridge cost $40,000 to construct. A freshet in January 1839 carried away one span. Skylights were included in a cupola over spans 3 and 4 to let light into the bridge. Originally a toll bridge, it was made free on September 11, 1889. Horse-car tracks were added in 1890 and the track was electrified two years later.
