Comments:
Closed. 14-panel truss. A bridge was constructed on this site in 1821 and covered in 1822. Although the exact details and extent of repairs in following years is not yet known, the bridge was rebuilt or repaired in some form in 1834 and 1846 with other repairs in intervening years. On May 13, 1846 the State of New York authorized a replacement bridge at the Wallkill River crossing “between the house of John R. Wood and Refton [sic] Mills.” Like most other 19th century covered bridge projects, it is not known how much of the old bridge may have been recycled and re-used during this reconstruction. John R. Wood (1802-1869), also known as Rosencrans Wood, was the carpenter who led this particular project. It is sometimes credited to his father, Benjamin Wood, who died prior to its construction. Wood’s obituary stated that he was “a man of very few words, but of excellent judgment in business matters.” He died October 1, 1869. The bridge was extensively repaired and reconstructed in 1968.
