Stratford Bridge, Delaware, Delaware County, OH Built 1852 Lost 1913
Todd Clark Collection
Comments:
Per David Simmons, the crossing was 3 spans (rather than 2) and approximately 200 feet. Per the Delaware Semi-Weekly Gazette (Delaware), March 12, 1909, the county was advertising a "BRIDGE-LETTING" for replacement of the covered bridge. with a "3 span through riveted truss steel bridge over the Olentangy river at Stratford, Delaware Township." The spans were to be 70 feet each and new sandstone masonry was being built as well. Per The Tribune (Hicksville), April 22, 1909, "Fifteen men, who were tearing down the old covered bridge at Stratford, Delaware county, were precipitated in to the Olentangy river, when, without warning, the east span of the bridge gave way. How some of the men escaped serious injury can hardly he conceived. All suffered cuts and bruises of a minor nature, together with a ducking In cold water."
