Comments:
County #99. On an old bypassed section of Old Zeigler Mill Road that ends at the bridge on its west end. The rerouted road passes by the east end of the covered bridge, following the east bank of the creek and no longer crosses the stream at all. Some maps are calling the rerouted road by this name and others call it Willow Lane (T585 in either case). A proposal in the April 24, 1873 Gettysburg Compiler stated, “Sealed proposals will be received in the office of the commissioners of Adams County in Gettysburg until the last day of May 1873 at 3 o’clock PM for the erection of a covered wooden bridge on the road leading from Daniel Trimmer's to Wierman's Mill where said road crosses Bermudian Creek near the residence of Hatton C. Kennedy in Huntingdon Township. For specifications and further information apply to the Commissioner's office in Gettysburg.” (newspaper courtesy of Linda Burns) H.C. Kennedy was found marked on the 1872 Adams County Atlas and was found to be the site of Heikes Bridge. The construction date has also been listed as “before 1852” and 1892. It is presently used for storage.
