Comments:
The bridge cost $4,241 to construct. It was built to replace the original crossing at Bartonsville that was north of the village (the river changed course in the flood of October 1869). That flood destroyed two covered bridges, the railroad station, and several houses in Rockingham. The bridge includes steel rods under the roadway to increase lateral strength and distribution beams tie-bolted under the deck. The Bartonsville bridge was washed downstream by floodwaters from Tropical Storm Irene on August 28, 2011.
