Comments:
The construction date is uncertain. There are claims that is was built after the flood of 1869 and others after a freshet in 1888. Although the support pier under the bridge in most images looks like a later addition, the two separate queenpost trusses of the bridge have probably required the pier since the original construction. One source indicates that the bridge was initially built uncovered. Per The Brattleboro Reformer, January 15, 1947, the covered bridge at South Newfane was to be replaced soon by a steel bridge. Per the Town Crier (Brattleboro), January 20, 1995, "The covered bridge in South Newfane still stands the day after the 1938 hurricane. It is told that the bridge was not washed away because when the river rose it was able to flow over the road; however, a large tree and its trunk stuck like an arrow through the center of the bridge and had to be removed in pieces with a two-man crosscut saw." Per The Brattleboro Reformer, January 15, 1947, the covered bridge at South Newfane was to be replaced soon by a steel bridge.
