Comments:
Myrtle Auvil's "Covered Bridges of West Virginia" listed the construction date as 1879. According to the West Virginia Department of Transportation, the bridge was built in 1884, by order of the county court, at a cost of $800. On February 14, 1923, the west abutment collapsed. It was replaced with a new abutment on June 23, 1923. In 1940 it was replaced with a concrete structure. The bridge received extensive repairs in 1962. A $543,932 restoration of the Herns Mill Covered Bridge, completed in 2000 by Grandview Construction, Inc. of Beckley, included installation of steel beams to support the timber roadway in addition to replacement of timber roof trusses, the metal roof and wooden exterior siding.
